Looking for ideas for using technology to create professional development for other educators

Hi everyone,

This is a pretty general request at this point, but I looking for ideas for using technology to create professional development for other educators. I'm thinking, for instance, format, applications/software, general tips, what works well, what does not, etc.

Thank you,

Kirsten

Hi Kirsten!

I am using Moodle to create a PLC for professional development for early learning education professionals. I like its flexibility in design. You can embed almost anything in there; You Tube videos, mind-maps, vokis, power points, HTML code and more. :)

I can be reached at judith.behrens@gmail. com  or JudibeeFL on Skype.

Thank you Judi!

And how are you accessing your particular Moodle platform  - who is being hosted by, or are you hosting it yourself?

Cheers,

Kirsten

We are using a moodle platform to host 5 day professional development events for educators. CEET Meet topics focus on the resources and skills needed to use technology in the classroom as well as on the skills needed to teach and learn in a virtual environment. We had over 2000 educators participate in one or more of our Ceet Meets last year. They events are free and flexible - participants can log in during the week at their convenience.

We are organizing a calendar of events for the upcoming school year. Is there a topic you recommend?

Hi Sandy,

I don't have a particular topic for recommendation, other than perhaps the one that I am currently exploring, which is ways for individuals, using technology, to help provide professional development rather than just receive it. Your message reminds me that one way is to get involved with a larger group/event such as CEET Meet.

Thank you for the info!

Kirsten

Hi Kirsten,

We have formed a subcommittee of our district pro-d committee around professional development online.  Similiar to the Moodle course Judi mentioned below, I have started a blog as a starting point and to collect resources and post online events including those presented by CEET! In addition our committee is hosting a day around "growing your PLN" on the Oct 19 PSA day. What I am finding so far is that people are very interested in PLNs (PLCs) but haven't found the time yet or find it all too overwhelming and so providing this opportunity on a provincial pro-d day will hopefully encourage them to start.

Hi Jodie,

How are you hosting PLN event on the October 19 PSA day? Will it be virtual or on-site somewhere? Could I add that to the online workshop (still under construction) that I, along with some other grad class members, are creating on Pro-D and technology, and which includes discussion of PLNs? We are also posting potential pro-d opportunities as part of this.

Thank you,

Kirsten

The event will be onsite in our district (we are listening to a keynote virtually) I'm not sure where you are but here's the link to our reg. page if you want to take a peek to see how we have organized it. It is going to be somewhat like an edcamp format.

I am not sure what you mean. Are you looking for a techno means to create the actual PD course...are you looking for a PD plan using technology?? If the former would could combine a general Google Apps course incorporating Edmodo or the blended learning platform I use, Classroom Collaborize....I try to teach teachers to use Glogster for mastery of curricular objectives expression....and I use Symbaloo as a means of creating a workable PLN....or I have PD plan that is quite wonderful and you would be welcome to use it....

Hi Kenneth,

Yes, I am looking more at the side of using technology to create/offer PD, and appreciate the ideas you've provided, although would be happy to see any PD plans as well in order to have a broader understanding of PD.

Thank you,

Kirsten

If you send me an e-mail address, I'll send you my "Big" plan...If you make a million dollars off of it, just remember me!

Thank you everyone for sharing your ideas with me - not only were your ideas about using technology to offer Pro-D useful, but the fact that I got information from a ning for the project was a key piece to my grad class project too, as developing PLNs and social networking in order to get Pro-D were also a point of the project. Anyway, it is here it is, if you are interested.

Cheers,

Kirsten

A great resource Kirsten! Thanks for sharing. I'd love to see what you think about this blog resource I have created for "newbies" in my district (or anywhere really). http://prod67.blogspot.ca/
