It's a Universe!

The BC Learning NEXUS is up and running with three initial worlds copied over from the Active Worlds Eduverse. One of these has been renamed the Hub and will serve as the gateway world for the NEXUS.
The others are VirtualBC, a work-in-progress showcase of six geographic regions of British Columbia, and WCQuest (West Coast Quest), a natural history simulation of the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Work continues on creating a comprehensive 3D object database, blank worlds, 100 citizenships, a NEXUS project website and other things. Project participants/world owners will be given the keys to their world and class sets of 20 student citizenships (additional cits available on request) as soon as possible...probably the last week of January.

I would like to announce that Objects world now has an area describing all of the building commands and triggers associated with version 5.1! When you enter Objects world, simply follow the sign designated "Version 5.1 Building Commands and Triggers".

Citizen Naming Convention

To distinguish adults from students in the NEXUS, I would like you to use the following naming convention: ADULT = JSmith  STUDENT = JohnnyS

Let me know if that creates any problems for you.

Thanks!

Ok, I figured out how to restore a missing terrain square after you tick the Hole option. All you have to do is right click select any square around the hole and then use an arrow key to move the selection to the missing square. Then you can un-tick the Hole option for that square.

I've worked out a few initial bugs in the rights settings for your worlds (e.g.: nobody could use text chat at first!), but I still have to figure out why you don't have the ability to change your world rights settings yourself. Must be a universe-level setting of some sort.

For those of you keeners who want to get started on terraforming your world, here's a tutorial that might help.  DO NOT tick the Hole option, because at this time, I have no way to restore terrain that has been made to vanish. If you do it by accident, there is supposed to be an Undo option. The purpose of the Hole option is to allow for access to tunnels underground, so if you are sure you want a tunnel, go ahead.

Which reminds me: don't forget you can build underground, or up in the sky: don't limit yourself to one level! Just try not to stack too many objects in a vertical column because you will hit your object limit sooner.

Very exciting Mark. I am so glad to see your vision finally being supported and about to be realized. I'll be looking forward to getting a key to this kingdom and doing all I can to support this venture into 3D immersive and experiential learning, where students can potentially learn in ways not possible with text, or even real life.

To take a tour of some cool worlds and get ideas about what can be done, check out NASA's NIA Universe.

Hosted by the National Institute of Aerospace, the NIA Universe is a unique collection of virtual worlds designed to explore and create science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content and experiences.

You should also check out the RealWorld-InWorld NASA Engineering Design Challenge, which encourages students in grades 9-12 to explore and to build skills essential for successful careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through two phases of project-based learning and team competition.
