Comment by Tamara Malloff on August 20, 2012 at 20:47 Sorry have been a bit negligent where this community is concerned. I just posted a final report on the professional development I did with SD 10 Arrow Lakes BC & it's been authorized for release. Take a look:
"Impact of Digital Footprint & Social Media Professional Develo.... (2012). Research report.
Also presented a paper with Colleague Rachel Moll at AERA 2012 this month:
"Educating with Social Media: Policy & Practice in British Columbia." (2012). Research paper co-authored with Rachel Moll. Presented at American Educational Research Association 2012 Annual Meeting: Non Satis Scire: To Know Is Not Enough (Vancouver, BC). AERA 2012 Proceeding 529949.
but the Reader's Digest version is in our presentation slides:
"Educating with Social Media: Policy & Practice in British Colu... (2012). Presentation co-authored with Rachel Moll. Presented at American Educational Research Association 2012 Annual Meeting: Non Satis Scire: To Know Is Not Enough (Vancouver, BC). Division C- Learning and Instruction, Section 7: Technology Research Paper Session: Investigation of Wikis for Collaboration and Knowledge Building April 13, 2012
Am also working on a cloud computing "package" with backgrounder, instructor planning guidelines, technology assessment worksheet & student consent form--would apply to social media too.
Comment by Sandy Hirtz on February 22, 2012 at 8:08 In the ePortfolio workshop being facilitated this week by Tamara Malloff and Sarah Soultau-Heller, Tamara suggested that a great graduation present would be a personal domain name for a student. She asks, should we allow learners to curate their own eportfolios from the start? Should branding be a part of a personal digital domain, curated by the learner for a lifetime of lifelong and lifewide learning?
It is such a great question I thought I would share it here.
In 2007, USA Today wrote an article called Parents buy domain names for babies. It states that "a growing number of parents are getting domain names for their young kids, long before they can do more than peck aimlessly at a keyboard."
If kids have their own domain name, they not only curate their own ePortfolios but their online identity. In CEET, Julia Hengstler discusses the importance of establishing and maintaining a healthy online identity.
I think it is a personal domain name is great idea not only as a graduation present, but even younger, before kids start facebooking and myspacing and posting on youtube etc.
CEET is a Collaborative Learning Community - to get advice from experts, exchange ideas and resources with peers, and discover ways to personalize learning and improve teaching and learning with technology.
