What defines or constitutes an eportfolio in today’s educational context? I am curious as to what platforms, formats, and pedagogy are underlying eportfolio programs in B.C. and beyond.…Continue

Comment by Tamara Malloff on June 15, 2011 at 10:10 Hi Corrie,
Here is a link to our eportfolio action research website--I've got a couple videos and resources that may be of use: http://eportfolioleadershipteam.yolasite.com/ Best of luck in your partnership! We conduct Grad Trans exit interviews with eportfolios, and it's been a wonderful, validating experience for the Grads and community members who sat as their panel.
Comment by cmacdonald@sd73.bc.ca on June 15, 2011 at 7:07 I definitely will. I am just building Planning 10 with a partner school and hope to include a Portfolio option. I would like the students to use it as an "all about me" idea so that when it is time for Graduation Transition the interview can be used by connecting me to their portfolio.
Comment by Tamara Malloff on June 14, 2011 at 19:03 Hi Corrie,
Yes, our school has Moodle, and we're integrating Mahara eports in with the LMS. So far, we have single sign-on capability. We'll be piloting Mahara in September; so far we've been using cloud website builders such as Yola.com and Weebly, for example. Mahara looks promising, and has the feel of a cloud social network, but with the privacy of a walled-garden (i.e./ student info is stored on a local server). Mahara allows students to form groups, "friend" each other, and create course views as well as collections of views (i.e./ Grade 10 collection of views). Mahara also allows students to embed 3rd party html through a plug in, so the experience is more like a cloud application. Best of all, Mahara is and remains "free." Let's stay in touch, Corrie--would like to connect with you before end of year. Let me know how it's going.

Comment by Sarah Soltau-Heller on June 4, 2011 at 10:26 Thanks so much for the feedback. I will read your links with interest. I have played with many of the things you have suggested this year. http://sarahjane.edublogs.org/ - students have blogged as part of Daily 5 writing, we have used VT as a record of reading development and I have also tried in incorporate my ipad, livescribe pen and evernote into my assessment collection. I am always looking to refine what we have done, make things more streamline, easier for kids and me :)
I am looking at how to tie it all together next year. I am exploring how to have students create portfolios, reflect on their learning and others' and also create assessment portfolios for my teacher assessment & evaluation - really trying to connect the 2.
I will follow this discussion with interest and I would love to connect with your colleague if they are willing. I have lots to learn and pull together. We were lucky enough to have received a rural innovation grant to explore this next year (my piece is a part of a larger project). I will follow this thread with interest. Thank you for your reply.
Comment by Tamara Malloff on June 4, 2011 at 10:03 I am working at the middle-high school level, but I have children at the elementary level, and am very interested in eportfolios right from elementary school through to high school, and for adult learners as well.
Having said that, here's a link to eportfolios across K-12 as a framework. "Eportfolios as storage" is a suggestion for elementary school level students, so for example, students may have blogs set up to showcase their learning. Considerations for safety/security, a digital space such as a wiki for aggregating the blogs, and access to technology (laptops/computers, scanners, and a video camera) are some prime considerations. Some teachers use Edublogs as a repository, with links to a class wiki. A scanner is great for artwork or printwork, and a video camera (I like Flip video cameras) are great for differentiating how learners blog their learning. Having a class blog as an anchor is also another way of aggregating student "blog-folios" as in this example. How the eportfolios are then leveraged in the learning process is key, in my opinion. So, student-led conferences using eportfolios are a means for validating learning, and making connections between grading and reporting and student-centered learning, as in this great example: gr2conference.pdf
Let me know if you have any thoughts, ideas, or questions--I have a colleague interested in developing eportfolios at the elementary level, so establishing any connections would be worthwhile. Good luck to you--I think starting this process at the elementary level is a terrific idea!
